Tell us about the genre you write in and how you came to write in that genre.
I write murder mysteries. I may be dating myself, but I grew up watching Murder She Wrote, Nancy Drew and The Hardy Boys, and Matlock and fell in love with the genre. I loved solving the whodunit.
The writing world is hard. What keeps you pushing forward?
The belief that I will succeed. What’s so wrong with delusions of grandeur? You have to start somewhere. I set goals and work to achieve them. I’ve never been short on drive and ambition.
Silly Question: If for some unforeseen reason you were only allowed to write one book in your life, what would it be about and why?
I would write a book about my father and his brothers. They were a unique group of men with interesting, compelling stories. In my book, my protagonist, Kari Marchant, recounts some stories about her father. Those stories are taken from my real life experiences with my father.
Tell us two things about your book—what two things do you think set your book apart from others?
My book is fast-paced with fully developed characters. It will keep you on the edge of your seat and leave you wanting more!
What are some behind the scenes secrets about your book?
First and again, aspects of the book are taken from my real life experiences. Second, writing the book has helped me work through some of my personal demons. And last, this is technically my second book. I never finished the first.
What was the last darned-good book you read besides your own, and what did you love about it. You know, a story you wished you'd written.
It’s been a while, but True Believer by Nicholas Sparks. The story was set in North Carolina, where I live, and had a mystery element to it. I enjoyed his characters, writing style, and his storytelling.
What are your strongest strengths as a writer?
I’m very good at dialogue. This wasn’t always the case, though. I don’t know exactly how I got better–if it was through reading, or writing classes, or both–I just did.
What are some areas you are working to improve in your writing?
I write short. I can describe something in a paragraph that may have been better described in a page. Even with this handicap, I’ve succeeded in spinning a good tale. Please believe there’s blood, sweat, and tears on those pages, even with so few words.
Author Bio:
Author Harlow Drake was born in Kansas City, MO, but grew up in Denver, CO. She relocated to North Carolina five years ago with her husband, two dogs, and 16-year old twins.

What is the book about?Detective Cobb and his partner Nicolet are trying to solve the murder of a young girl in foster care named Patience Dolo. Kari Marchant who is Patience Social Worker seems to be their prime suspect for the murder. Everyone around Kari seems to be dying and it just makes sense that it might be her, including her childhood friend and co-worker Mina Steele. You won't believe who the murder is!
What did I think of the book?What an awesome book. It wasn't very long but it kept me hooked so I pretty much read this in a few hours. Kari Marchant was an easy character to sympathize with. Her life was quite hectic and I felt like it couldn't possibly be true that she was the murder. Boy was I surprised when I found out who the killer really is. Harlow Drake uses just enough combination of humor, gore, and mystery for my taste. I recommend anyone who likes crime and mystery novels.
